LAOAG CITY – The municipality of Currimao in Ilocos Norte is set to light up over 200 lamp posts, each looking like a miniature lighthouse, along a 2.8-kilometer seawall boulevard and fisherman’s wharf on Oct. 17 to usher in the Christmas season.

The array of lamp posts, called “Currilights,” has become a key tourism infrastructure development in Currimao covering the villages of Pangil, Poblacion 1 and 2, Lioes, Torre, and Salugan.

Mayor Edward Quilala announced the lighting of the “Currilights” on Facebook on Wednesday.

In a separate post, the Currimao Tourism Office said the lighting of the “Currilights” “marks the beginning of the Christmas season in Currimao, illuminating our coastal streets with festive cheer and community pride.”

The seawall is one of the favorite spots by locals and visitors to catch the sunset in the coastal municipality.

Located about 459 kilometers from Manila, Currimao is one of the smallest towns in Ilocos Norte and is home to rich cultural treasures such as the Tabacalera and Spanish lighthouse ruins, both just a few meters from the seawall.

In partnership with the provincial government of Ilocos Norte, the Currimao government has been reinvigorating its tourism industry to generate jobs and livelihood for its residents.

Quilala said he expects more visitors to come to the municipality once the lamp posts that line up the seawall are lit up.

To complement this, several stalls offering various gastronomic treats have been pre-positioned along the seawall.

The local government is also promoting the area as a venue for sporting events, trade fairs, and live concerts. (PNA)
